Ishaq Gailani
Sayed Ishaq Gailani is the leader of the National Solidarity Movement of Afghanistan. Born circa 1950, he is a strong partisan of a monarchic system and as such has long militated for the return of the former Afghan king Mohammad Zaher-Shah. Sayed Ishaq Gailani was active during the years of war against the Soviet-backed regime and spent most of his time in Peshawar working successively with the National Islamic Front of Afghanistan and the Afghan National Liberation Front of Afghanistan.
During the Taliban years (1996-2001), Sayed Ishaq Gailani, along with other personalities such as Houmayoun Jareer, Jalil Shams, Azizullah Ludin, Abdul Qadir Amiryar, worked through a number of gatherings in Cyprus to find ways to resolve the ongoing conflict through peaceful means. Gailani was a delegate at the Bonn conference of Dec. 2001.
Sayed Ishaq Gailani leaves in the Afghan capital and has voiced criticism against the way the countrys affairs are handled by both Karzai and the US. Gailani has also advocated for a referendum to be held to determine the type of regime the country really wants. His wife Fatana has also been very active in humanitarian work to benefit children and in particular girls. |
